Why Front Door Refinishing Beats Replacement
Your front door does more visible work than any other surface on your home. It greets every guest, weathers every Chicago season, and shows every imperfection under bright sunlight. When the finish on a premium custom door starts to fail, replacement is rarely the right answer — a quality custom door runs $3,000 to $15,000 to replace, and professional refinishing returns it to like-new at a fraction of that cost. We refinish front doors across Chicago's North Shore and Southwest Suburbs — in-place when possible, removed and finished off-site when the door type or finish system requires it. Mahogany, oak, fiberglass, custom-built. Painted, stained, or lacquered with Fine Paints of Europe Full Gloss for that furniture-grade finish.
Restore, Don't Replace
Premium custom doors are $3,000–$15,000 to replace. Refinishing returns them to like-new at a fraction of the cost.
Three Finish Systems
Choose from durable acrylic enamel for painted doors, marine-grade spar urethane for stained natural wood, or Fine Paints of Europe Full Gloss for the lacquered furniture-grade look.
In-Place or Off-Site
Most projects can be completed in-place to keep your home secure. When the finish system requires controlled conditions, we coordinate door removal and shop spraying.

Solutions designed for your specific situation
Standard Repaint
Premium exterior acrylic enamel applied over thorough prep, primer, and crack/dent fill. Two-coat application with marine-grade sealant top finish. Best for most painted front doors where color flexibility and durability are the priorities.
Learn MoreRestoration & Re-Stain
Marine-grade spar urethane on natural wood. Strip down to bare wood, sand, stain to refresh or change tone, multi-coat sealant build. Best for mahogany and other premium hardwood doors meant to show grain.
Learn MorePremium Specialty (FPE Full Gloss)
Fine Paints of Europe Full Gloss for the lacquered, furniture-grade finish you can check your reflection in. Multi-coat application with sanding between every coat; the substrate must be near-perfect, which is why this option requires off-site spray work. Best for high-end homes where the front door is meant to be the statement.

Our Front Door Refinishing Process
From assessment to walkthrough — here is what to expect.
Assessment
On-site evaluation of door material, current finish condition, weather exposure, and your aesthetic goals. We determine in-place vs. off-site work, recommend a finish system, and provide a detailed quote.
Surface Preparation
Strip or sand existing finish (decision based on substrate, prior product, and condition). Address any wood damage, address rot if present, and clean thoroughly.
Repair & Fill
Hardware-hole patching if hardware is being relocated, structural wood repair where needed, dent and grain filling. Doors receiving FPE Full Gloss require near-perfect substrate, so this step takes longer for the premium tier.
Prime
Substrate-appropriate primer matched to the chosen topcoat system. FPE systems use FPE primers; standard systems use compatible exterior primers.
Finish Application
Multiple thin coats with sanding between. Two coats for standard repaints; three to five coats for FPE Full Gloss with extended dry times between each.
Hardware Reinstallation & Walkthrough
Lock sets, knockers, hinges, and weatherstripping reinstalled. Final walkthrough together to verify finish quality before we leave.

Front Door Refinishing FAQs
Common questions about our services
Most front door projects take one to two days depending on the scope. A simple repaint with proper prep can be done in a single day. Full wood stripping and refinishing with multiple coats typically takes two days, allowing proper dry time between coats. We can arrange temporary door coverage overnight if needed.
It depends on the door and the work needed. Removing the door allows us to work flat, which gives the best results for stain and varnish finishes. For painted doors, on-site refinishing works well and avoids security concerns overnight. We will recommend the best approach during your consultation.
For Chicago's climate, we use premium exterior acrylic enamel for painted doors. It resists cracking through freeze-thaw cycles and holds color in direct sun. For natural wood doors, we apply marine-grade spar urethane that handles moisture and temperature swings beautifully. Both options provide lasting protection.
Painted front doors with quality product typically last five to seven years before needing a refresh, depending on sun exposure and weather. Stained wood doors may need recoating every two to three years, especially south-facing doors taking direct sun. We can apply UV-resistant topcoats to extend the life of any finish.
