Paint Aluminum Siding: Complete Guide for Chicago Homeowners (2026 Real Costs & Best Products)

Alex Z.

That chalky white residue on your fingers when you touch your aluminum siding? You're not imagining it. And yes, you can paint over it—but only if you prep it right. Skip the prep, and you'll be repainting in two years instead of ten.

I've been painting aluminum siding on Chicago-area homes for over a decade. The good news: it takes paint beautifully when done correctly. The challenge: most contractors (and almost all DIYers) underestimate what "correctly" means.

Why Paint Aluminum Siding?

Aluminum siding was the premium choice for Chicago homes built from the 1950s through the early 1980s. It's durable—the actual metal can last 40-50 years. But the factory finish? That's a different story.

Paint lasts 5 to 10 years on aluminum siding before showing significant fading, chalking, or wear. We see this constantly with aluminum-sided homes from the 1980s—especially homeowners in Western Springs and similar suburbs where the original earth tones have faded to that telltale chalky gray.

The economics work strongly in favor of painting versus replacement. Replacing aluminum siding costs $3 to $11 per square foot, while painting runs $1.50 to $2.50 per square foot for professional work.

Real 2026 Aluminum Siding Painting Costs in Chicago

Most homeowners spend between $3,125 and $8,300 to paint a 2,500-square-foot home, but Chicago-area pricing has some regional factors worth noting.

Project SizeDIY MaterialsProfessional Total
Ranch home (1,500 sq ft)$800-$1,200$2,400-$4,200
Two-story colonial (2,500 sq ft)$1,300-$2,000$3,800-$6,200
Large home with detail work (3,500+ sq ft)$1,800-$2,800$5,200-$8,500

The wide ranges reflect prep requirements. Heavily chalked siding that needs hand scrubbing and bonding agents hits the high end. Well-maintained siding with light oxidation stays toward the lower numbers.

Painters charge $25 to $100 per hour in the Chicago market, with most aluminum siding projects taking a three-person crew 3-5 days including prep.

This puts aluminum siding right in the middle range of exterior house painting costs in the Chicago area. Understanding how long exterior paint lasts on different materials helps you decide if the investment makes sense.

The Chalking Problem Nobody Warns You About

The oxidation that occurs with aluminum siding results in the build up of a chalk like substance on the siding itself which can easily be seen by wiping your hand across the aluminum. This isn't dirt—it's the paint binder breaking down under UV exposure.

This substance, if not removed, will affect how well the paint can adhere to the siding. Power washing alone won't cut it. In order to remove enough of the chalk like substance with a power washer, you would need to get close enough to the siding that you run the risk of damaging it.

The test: wipe the siding with a dark cloth after cleaning. If it comes away white, you're not done.

Prep That Actually Works: The Three-Step Process

Step 1: Power Wash (But Not How You Think)

The first step in our hand washing process is to lightly power wash the siding. This removes surface dirt and gets the aluminum wet for scrubbing. Use downward angles to avoid forcing water behind the siding.

Step 2: Hand Scrub with TSP

Once it is wet, we use brushes and a cleaning agent to hand scrub the siding. The cleaning agent makes the removal of the chalk easier and it also kills any mold, mildew or algae that may be growing on the siding.

TSP (trisodium phosphate) is the professional standard. Mix according to package directions and scrub with soft-bristle brushes. Pay special attention to areas protected from rain—under eaves, behind downspouts—where contamination builds up.

Step 3: Final Rinse and Dry Time

Following the scrubbing, we will go back over the siding with a light power wash to give it a final rinse to remove all of the chalking and dirt.

Then wait. Wait at least 2 weeks for water that WILL have got under the joints. Then wait further for at least 3-4 days of sunny weather. Chicago's humidity makes this drying time non-negotiable.

Primer: When You Need It (And When You Don't)

If your aluminum siding has its original factory finish that's just faded or chalked, you might skip primer. Priming the aluminum siding is not necessary unless you have bare spots of aluminum. The most important thing is to clean the surface properly getting any chalk and dirt off of the surface.

But if you see exposed metal, you need primer. A self-etching primer is your best bet. These are specifically designed to bond with bare metals, among other surfaces, leading to better adhesion and corrosion resistance.

Stick with an oil-based primer on exterior aluminum siding. Latex primers can react with the metal, trapping gas bubbles that lead to early flaking and peeling.

Best Paint Products for Chicago-Area Aluminum Siding

Skip the big-box store guessing game. Here's what actually works in our climate:

Sherwin-Williams Options (Available at Local SW Stores)

Sherwin Williams DTM bonding primer on any bare aluminum and then applying two coats of a 100% acrylic latex, our choice of paints for aluminum is Sherwin Williams Super Paint.

SuperPaint runs about $55-65 per gallon and offers solid durability for the price point. For premium results, step up to Duration or Emerald Exterior.

Benjamin Moore Options (Available at JC Licht Locations)

Aura is Benjamin Moore's top of the line. Not cheap but good stuff. For the North Shore market, Aura runs $75-85 per gallon but delivers 12-15 year performance when properly applied.

Regal Select Exterior offers similar technology at $60-70 per gallon—still premium performance without the Aura price tag.

The Finish Question

Usually, you want to use a satin paint to be the closest to the original finish. A highly glossy finish will show every ding and a flat will look old and dull.

Satin sheen hides minor imperfections while maintaining washability—crucial for Chicago's urban dirt and pollution.

DIY vs. Professional: The Real Math

Material costs for a 2,500 sq ft home run $1,300-2,000. Sounds reasonable for DIY, until you factor in:

  • Ladder/scaffolding rental: $200-400
  • Pressure washer rental (if needed): $150-250
  • Brushes, rollers, sprayer, drop cloths: $300-500
  • Time: 60-80 hours over 2-3 weeks

If the prep alone sounds like more work than you bargained for, professional exterior painting starts to look pretty reasonable. We handle the ladder work, know which corners you can't cut, and warranty the results.

Application Methods: Spray vs. Roll

Spray painting offers a few advantages for aluminum siding, making it an overall better option than rolling. Spraying is faster and easier, and the coats are more likely to apply evenly.

Professionals typically spray the main field areas and back-roll detail work. This gives the smooth factory look while ensuring adequate mil thickness.

DIY spraying requires serious masking—overspray carries much further than most homeowners expect. Chicago weather and painting timing matters especially for spray work, where wind can ruin a day's effort.

How Long Will It Last?

A high-quality paint job applied to properly prepared aluminum siding can generally be expected to last between 10 and 20 years. In Chicago's climate, figure on the conservative end—10-12 years for excellent work, 6-8 years for corner-cutting jobs.

The primary failure mode on aluminum is chalking, a process where ultraviolet (UV) radiation breaks down the paint's resin binder, leaving behind a fine, powdery pigment residue on the surface. The cycle repeats, but proper prep and quality paint slow it significantly.

When Painting Doesn't Make Sense

Sometimes replacement beats repainting:

  • Severe denting or impact damage
  • Multiple layers of failing paint (3+ previous paint jobs)
  • Widespread corrosion or holes
  • Siding installed before 1978 (potential lead concerns)

The Bottom Line on Aluminum Siding Painting

Done right, painting aluminum siding delivers 10+ years of fresh curb appeal at roughly 25% the cost of replacement. The key word: done right. The prep work separates lasting results from expensive do-overs.

Planning the timing right matters—see our guide to Chicago weather and painting timing for seasonal considerations. And if you're weighing the full scope of exterior updates, understanding broader exterior house painting costs helps with budgeting.
